Donald Design | Design Director

Create branding identity programs, packaging, collateral, advertising, books, exhibits and websites. Designed and produced first issue of national publication, Tea Room Guide & Digest. Create wide range of award-winning collateral for Clearwater Paper. Local and national clients include Infinera, Lyle, Raley's, Backscratchers, Rancher, SUSE, UC Davis, zigbee, Campfire Treats, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, FUSE3, The Reilly Company, Vungle, Solsken, Intel, and Clearwater Paper.


March 1999 - December 2002

Pulse! Magazine | Creative Director

Created and maintained new visual style for Pulse! Magazine, a music monthly distributed in Tower Records stores throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America. Designed new logo and typographic format to appeal to younger audience; designed in-store promotional materials; created subscription and advertising sales collateral for magazine. Worked with Tower Records Chief Marketing Officer to establish branding standards; update/refine Tower logotype. Designed graphics and publications for special events. Created magazine website format and oversaw its production. Directed staff of five print and web designers; managed photo and illustration budgets. 


October 1992 - February 1999

Before & After Magazine | Design Editor

Established (with Creative Director) editorial direction and content of Before & After, a graphic design magazine for desktop publishers; originated story ideas and developed ideas into finished feature articles and special sections; designed page layout; created illustration styles for graphics; designed “After” examples; illustrated concise step-by-step demonstration graphics; directed final “camera ready art” and digital pagination of each issue; managed art staff; served as liaison to free-lance writers and designers; edited back issue revisions and reprints; managed prepress and printing vendors; maintained highest quality standards for both English and French editions of Before & After.


July 1982 - October 1992

Sacramento Magazine | Design Director

Set visual style and art direction of a nationally award-winning regional magazine, as well as promotional and special events collateral and sales tools; extensive experience in photographic art direction and the development of concepts for illustration; designed typographic formats for Sacramento magazine, Regional City Guide, Sacramento Made Easy, Dining Guide and other publications produced by Sacramento magazine‘s Special Publications division; designed layout of all monthly feature articles; managed budgets for editorial art departments; directed art staff; functioned in all areas of print production, including quality control.
